While Caprock Canyon is an incredible place to camp, it’s also a popular destination—especially during the spring and fall when the weather is mild. Securing a campsite can be tricky during peak seasons, and without the proper planning, you might miss out on the best spots. Moreover, the summer heat can make camping a bit uncomfortable if you’re not prepared.

Plus, choosing the right campsite is essential for maximizing your experience. Whether you prefer lakeside views, proximity to hiking trails, or secluded areas, making the right choice can make a huge difference. And while the park offers great amenities, there’s a learning curve for newcomers who may not know exactly where to go or what to expect.

The 4th of July weekend was one of those possible long weekends off work. Since I have four-day weekend, we decided to continue our exploration of Texas State Parks far from the bustling cities and highways and chose Caprock Canyons, and some others along our route, to create an unforgettable experience.

The campsite we reserved was a walk-to campsite by the lake, but we looked for other available spots. Campgrounds in this state park book full months in advance so we were lucky to find one for our first night where we can just back up our truck, and not have to walk quite a way in a rugged trail. Our neighbor camper did tell us right away that they saw a rattle snake across the park road nearby. I bought garlic for our cooking, so the garlic ended up outside our tent door. We never heard of the snake again in our entire stay.

Bison. The park is home to a diverse array of animals. One of the most captivating experiences here is encountering the Texas State Bison herd. These majestic creatures roam freely across the park’s grasslands, offering a glimpse into the untamed beauty of the American West. Keep your camera ready for a chance to capture these iconic animals against the backdrop of the sweeping prairies.

We drove around the park to see the bison since we did not encounter the herd on our way in to the park. Not long after that we saw the herd. While we saw the herds of bison in Custer State Park in South Dakota, we never had seen any in Texas.

Birds. Over 175 species of birds give birdwatchers delight in the park’s avian residents, from golden eagles soaring overhead to vibrant songbirds flitting among the juniper and mesquite trees, and don’t forget roadrunners. Our preschooler was having a great time chasing them!

Prairie Dogs. Caprock Canyons State Park is home to a vibrant colony of black-tailed prairie dogs. These small, social rodents are a delight to watch as they pop in and out of their burrows, chirping and interacting with one another. Prairie dogs play a crucial role in the ecosystem of Caprock Canyons. Their burrowing activities help aerate the soil, promoting plant growth and providing habitats for other animals such as burrowing owls and various insects.

One of the most memorable features of this trail is the sound echo. Our little one was thrilled to shout into the canyon and hear her voice bounce back from the rock walls—something that’s both fun and awe-inspiring. The viewpoints along the trail are ideal for snapping photos of the park’s rugged terrain and expansive landscapes.

To really feel the park, we decided to hike on an easy and short trail since we have our young daughter with us. The hike to Canyon Rim is only about 0.62-mile one way and offered us great view of the canyon and gave our girl an idea to shout to hear her voice echoing though the canyon.

2. Upper Canyon Trail: Explore the Heart of the Canyons
